One of the songs that I love hearing as I throw my paper route every morning in the freezing cold winter weather is ‘these are a few of my favorite things’ from The Sound of Music. Yes, I am one of “those” people that start listening to Christmas music the day after Halloween, and I love it. Although, I don’t think this is really a Christmas song, but the song does mention brown paper packages, and snow bells, and slay bells, so I think it gets lumped into the Christmas category on Cozy 106.5. This is one of those songs that in my opinion have to be sung by the original, Miss Julie Andrews. It just isn’t quite the same when Rod Stewart sings it, and there is something wrong with a guy singing that cream colored ponies are one of his favorite things. Am I right? Well, as I was singing at the top of my lungs this morning thru the streets of Highland, I started a mental list of a few of my favorite things about this time of year. I don’t have a catchy rhyme or anything and it doesn’t really go with the music, but here you go.
*Crawling back into my bed after my paper route to find my own personal space heater (Genrty or Lanie, depending on the day) in my spot keeping it all warm for me. When I get in and push Gentry to the middle, and I get all cozy, he rolls to me like a magnet and wraps his arm around me. It’s one of those smile from ear to ear moments for me, and I wish everyone out there had a Gentry, or a Lanie, (or a Gavin, Sophie, or Grayson for that matter) to snuggle with.
*The Swiss Colony catalog full of cheese. There is nothing that says Christmas is coming like the Swiss Colony catalog!
*Anything made out of pumpkin. Pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, it’s all good.
*Soup weather.
*My crock-pot, and the yummy dinners that can be made with little effort.
*The little elf’s that come to me every now and again with special ideas that they have for gifts for each other, or for friends, or family. I love my thoughtful children and I love when they think of others before themselves.
*The excitement and MAGIC I feel, and that we all can feel this time of year, if we let the world go and focus on the love we have for each other and how truly blessed we are.
*The knowledge I have of my Savior and how blessed I have been in my life because of that knowledge.
…and these are a few of my faaaavorite things.

You're one of my favorite things. (I know the greatest things in our lives are not THINGS.) But it fits. You continue to inspire me. (Yes, I am blogging at school. I'm bored and it's my prep time and the kids are at Art.) LOVE YOU!
That's cute. I am an early Christmas music person too... I am so jealous you guys are going to Disneyland!!! That will be so fun. How did you get someone to take over your paper route for you??? Oh and umm pardner, when will you be back?
Perfect! I had hoped you were as Cristmas crazy as Brian is!!!
I too love Swiss Colony and I want everything!
Have a GREAT time on your get a way!!
I can't believe I spelled Christmas wrong! Sorry!
P.S. I flip back and forth between 106.5 and 100.3 when the commercials come on - double the Christmas music!!!
Yes Soup! Where is my Chicken Tortilla Soup woman? And when are we gonna have a Sound of Music Party? With all the Schmalz woman and bond?
love the list!
I agree with Andrea about the Sound of Music party. That sounds like a great idea!
Ha Ha Ha!! Rod Stewart!! Amen, sister! You're amazing!! I think I say something along those "you're amazing" lines every time I comment on your blog, but it's just plain ol' true!
Isaac has been choosing the "Forgotten Carol" to listen to in the car for at least a month now---I LOVE Christmas music. But I try to hold off until it snows. Then I can break it out.
Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music has to be up there with snuggling by the fire or having a homemade cinnamon roll...fills you with happiness.
Yummy crock pot dinners FOR SURE! I agree with Andrea and Rebecca..we need to have a "bonding" Schmalz girl night!
I was at my sisters house looking at your blog and saw Gavin's picture and she said "He looks exactly like Dan!!" I just thought that was cute. I never thought about it, but he kind of does :]
I loved watching The Sound of Music on TV every year- favorite. Thanks for sharing your favorite things- it helps me remember all I am blessed with.
I ahve to say that is my favorite post of the day!
Swiss Colony is still in business?
Mmmm, I love soup weather too.
And although I'm not normally one to listen to Christmas music until December, I have been putting it on for the girls to listen to while they fall asleep.
I guess miracles really do happen.
3 more positives to the winter season:
1-no weeding
2-wintery smells (pine, cinnamon, etc.)
3-with a coat on, someone could conceivably run a quick errand without putting a bra on. Not that I would.
Hey, I'm a guy and like cream colored ponies! (Well, I could...)
If you like Swiss Colony, and you like pumpkin, you've got to try the pumpkin fudge. A friend ordered some for our pumpkin carving get together and it was amazing! I even duplicated the recipe using some pumpkin left over from the carving - it's not quite the same as getting it in the mail, but it was a close second...
I am totally in the dark with the cheese catalog...where have I been? And I must also ask...what's "schnitzel with noodles"? (I'm just here for the food!)
You are such a good Mom and a great example to me. I think that reading your blog is one of my favorite things!
